The Prince of Wales will represent the COP30 climate summit in South America next month, according to royal officials.

Prince William and King Charles appeared together on Thursday evening at a reception preceding the environmental conference, which is planned for in the Amazonian city of Belém.

The royal pair were present at the Natural History Museum reception, marking an unusual joint appearance at a climate summit preparatory event co-hosted by the United Kingdom administration.

The King has been a longstanding advocate of protecting nature - and Prince William has assumed the responsibility, with his own climate innovation awards, which will be hosted in Rio ahead of the UN meeting.

Palace insiders have described the Prince's participation at the upcoming climate summit as stepping up an important role in "global climate discussions".

The climate conference will coincide with the the royal's climate innovation prizes, which will conclude in the Brazilian city the previous day he joins the climate conference on 6 November.

In recent days the William referred to the award contenders as "contemporary champions".

Monarch's Environmental Record

The monarch has been a prominent presence at previous climate summits, giving the opening address in the United Arab Emirates for COP28, including the observation: "The Earth does not belong to us, we belong to the Earth".

"Throughout my life I've dedicated a large proportion of my life trying to raise awareness about the critical dangers challenging our world over global warming, environmental shifts and species extinction," the sovereign addressed delegates.
